Syed Thajudeen

Syed Thajudeen Shaik Abu Talib, a luminary in the Malaysian art scene, was born in the village of Alagankulam in Southern India in 1943. His early years were spent in Penang, Malaysia, where his artistic inclinations were nurtured, before formal art training in India, where he earned a post diploma in Fine Arts by 1974.

Upon returning to Malaysia, Thajudeen embarked on a teaching journey at the Institut Teknologi MARA, later joining the United Asian Bank as a resident artist. His works, deeply influenced by the Bauhaus art of Paul Klee and Malay culture, range from miniature to grand mural-sized masterpieces, demonstrating his mastery over figurative art.

Thajudeen’s artistry has garnered international acclaim, with exhibitions in countries like the USA, Belgium, the UK, and China. His creations adorn prestigious institutions, including the National Art Gallery of Malaysia and Singapore Art Museum, as well as numerous corporate buildings and private residences. In 2015, he was honoured with an invitation to hold his Retrospective at the Penang State Art Gallery & Museum.

Over the years, Thajudeen’s exhibitions have captivated audiences worldwide, starting with his debut at the Penang State Museum and Art Gallery in 1975. His most recent show, “Splendours of Love: The Art of Syed Thajudeen,” was held in 2018.
